Jeanie Bryson passed away on June 19, 2026 at the age of 68.
She was born on Mar. 10, 1958 in New York City, the daughter of Dizzy Gillespie and composer Connie Bryson.
Dizzy Gillespie being her father was kept secret for decades since he was married but he did visit her occasionally through the years and seemed proud of her singing ability.
Bryson played piano and flute while growing up, studying anthropology and ethnomusicology in college.
While she sang on weekends in the 1980s (developing a softly swinging style), she also worked in the post office until she was able to sing fulltime later in the decade.
Jeanie Bryson recorded five albums during 1993-2006 including I Love Being Here With You and Some Cats Know, the latter a program of Peggy Lee songs.
From 1991, Jeanie Bryson is featured on her mother’s composition “Simple Song.”
