Oscar Peterson was a big influence on fellow jazz great and pianist John Lewis. Lewis did musical direction for the Modern Jazz Quartet.
Lewis, who died in 2001, was notable for blending the sounds of the jazz and classical genres. He gave structure and organization to the larger jazz band structure, necessary to enhance the solos and other improvisational elements of the format.
