Eddie Condon (1905-73) was a fine rhythm guitarist but was most important as a bandleader, spokesman for the music he loved, and a musical choreographer who knew how to count off the perfect tempo and feature every musician in his all-star bands at their best.

From a 1961 half-hour special sponsored by Goodyear Tires, Condon leads a particularly top-notch group consisting of cornetist Wild Bill Davison, trombonist Cutty Cutshall, clarinetist Peanuts Hucko, pianist Johnny Varro, bassist Joe Williams, and drummer Buzzy Drootin.

While those musicians played “Royal Garden Blues” a countless number of times in their careers, they always contributed quite a bit of fire to the cooking medium-tempo blues.

Each of the players (other than Condon) gets their spot but be sure to watch and listen closely to Wild Bill Davison who adds color and excitement to every phrase that he plays.
