Duke Ellington and his orchestra recorded many three-minute gems in the 1920s, ‘30s, 40s and early 1950s that became standards.

His last “pop” hit was 1953’s “Satin Doll” which he co-wrote with Billy Strayhorn; after that time Ellington began to emphasize longer and more involved suites.

“Satin Doll” is still played constantly and has remained well-known even after more than 70 years.

For this version from the late 1950s, Ellington and bassist Aaron Bell are in the spotlight.
