Trombonist Kid Ory (1886-1973) was one of the early pioneers of New Orleans jazz, even having an opportunity to play a little bit with Buddy Bolden.

Ory’s band in the 1910s at different times featured King Oliver and the young Louis Armstrong.

In the 1920s, Ory’s tailgate style was definitive and influential; he recorded with Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, and Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five.

After a period off the scene in the 1930s, Ory made a major comeback by the mid-1940s and was quite active for the next 15 years leading his Creole Jazz Band.

In 1959, he toured Europe with a group featuring the great trumpeter Henry “Red” Allen, clarinetist Bob McCracken, pianist Cedric Haywood, bassist William Girsback, and drummer Alton Redd (the father of alto-saxophonist Vi Redd).

Ory’s spirited version of “Shine” is taken uptempo and has some hot solos along with two choruses of quirky singing from Redd.
