The Midiri Brothers (clarinetist Joe Midiri and vibraphonist Paul Midiri) have long been one of the most significant swing combos around, appearing at many clubs and festivals.
While the influences of Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton can be heard in their playing, the Midiris have their own voices on their instruments and play with virtuosity, wit, creativity, and of course swing.
A pianoless and trumpetless version of the group is featured in 2013 playing an uptempo version of “Shine.”
The Midiris are joined by guitarist Pat Mercuri, bassist Ed Wise, and drummer Jim Lawlor, each of whom get some solo space.
However it is the four-chorus clarinet solo, the three choruses of vibes, and the closing ensembles that are most exciting and show why the Midiris were so highly rated.
