Throughout his career, Ben Webster often displayed a musical split personality.

The tenor-saxophonist tended to sound gruff and almost brutish on uptempo songs while purring like a pussycat on ballads.

For a memorable version of “Some Other Spring” in which he largely plays the melody but with great sensitivity, Ben Webster is joined by a small string orchestra in Europe that includes bassist Niels Pederson.

This is certainly beautiful music.
