Chick Corea gained his greatest fame with the general public in the 1970s when he led Return To Forever, but there was always much more to him than playing electric fusion.

Almost two decades later, at a time when he was leading his popular Elektric Band, Corea also put together his Akoustic Band which included two members of the Elektric ensemble: bassist John Patitucci and drummer Dave Weckl.

The Akoustic Band gave Corea an opportunity to concentrate on his piano playing in a conventional trio that played music that was often anything but conventional.

Corea digs into Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Lady” (usually interpreted as a melodic ballad) with fresh variations, passion, and inventive enthusiasm.

Patitucci states the melody before the performance comes to a surprising conclusion.
