Stevie Wonder has had quite a career as a singer, songwriter and harmonica player.
While he has carved out his own musical legacy in r&b/soul and been a popular attraction for 60 years, Wonder is also a capable jazz player.
Years ago at a Hollywood Bowl concert featuring Chick Corea, Wonder joined him on keyboards during “Spain” and held his own as a jazz soloist.
For this rendition of “Spain” from 2008, Wonder turns his band loose with short but spirited spots for Ryan Kilgore on tenor, guitarist Errol Cooney, Roman Johnson on keyboards, trumpeter Dwight Adams, guitarist Kyle Bolden, percussionist Munyungo Jackson, keyboardist Victoria Theodore, bassist Nathan Watts, Fausto Cuevas III. on congas, and drummer Stanley Randolph.
Stevie Wonder, who is just heard briefly on harmonica and keyboards, should have taken a solo but he wanted to use “Spain” to feature his excellent band.
