Phil Woods (1931-2015) was one of the all-time great alto-saxophonists and had a 65 year career.
This rare film clip features Woods in a quartet that also includes bassist George Duvivier (the pianist and drummer unfortunately cannot really be seen) sometime in the 1970s.
Woods performs an uptempo version of “Speak Low” and sounds barely able to control his excitement during the opening melody statement.
He takes an explosive solo filled with double-time runs which briefly becomes a duet with Duvivier and includes a short tradeoff with the drummer.
