Johnny Hodges’ “Squatty Roo” (based on “I Got Rhythm”) gives the multi-talented James Morrison (who is also a brilliant trombonist) an opportunity to romp on an uptempo tune on trumpet with the Emmet Cohen trio.
Morrison, one of Australia’s top jazz artists, takes a heated trumpet solo, easily sailing into his upper register.
Pianist Cohen eats up the chord changes during his hard-swinging spot (Morrison clearly enjoys hearing the solo), bassist Philip Norris takes a couple of energetic choruses, and drummer Joe Farnsworth is featured in some tradeoffs with Morrison and Cohen before making a statement of his own.
The romp is quite joyful with Morrison’s high note at its conclusion serving as a perfect topper.
