Dick Hyman, one of the most remarkable jazz pianists of all time, has long had the ability to sound like any other pianist, from Fats Waller to Cecil Taylor.

While he mostly played stride and swing in the second half of his career, he never lost the ability or desire to play more modern when it fit the music.

On “Sweet Georgia Brown,” Hyman (who was 86 at the time) fully explores the familiar standard, hinting at Bud Powell early on, engaging in some hot stride piano, and playing some lines worthy of Art Tatum; all of it seems so effortless for him.
