While Gregory Porter did not record his first album until he was in his late thirties, he has made up for the late start, becoming quite popular during the past decade.

Porter, who has a friendly onstage manner and a deep but flexible baritone voice, performs music that straddles the boundaries between 1950s jazz, soul, r&b and occasionally gospel, always emphasizing positive messages in his songs.

In addition to his singing, he is an inventive and skilled songwriter whose pieces are just beginning to be adopted and performed by others.

The inspirational “Take Me To The Alley” pays tribute to his mother, a minister who always went out of her way to help others.
