Because his virtuosic playing could be pretty flashy and he sometimes played classical music and pop tunes, pianist Peter Nero (1934-2023) tends to be overlooked in the jazz world.

However, as he shows on this television appearance from 1966, Nero was capable of playing jazz solos on the level of an Oscar Peterson.

Peter Nero starts out “Tea For Two” as a melodic slow piece (sprinkling in some song quotes) and then really tears into it with his trio, showing that he could have been a leading jazz pianist if he had stuck to that path.
