That’s A Plenty – 1986

Peanuts Hucko All-Stars

8 immortal horn players plus Ralph Sutton

At the 1986 Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland, probably for a set closer, eight masterful Dixieland/swing horn greats were joined by a top-notch rhythm section for a rollicking version of “That’s A Plenty.”

After the opening ensembles, Ralph Sutton (probably the top stride pianist to emerge since the Swing era) gets to stretch out on three choruses that set the standard for what is to follow.

Trombonists Bill Allred and George Masso trade off, trumpeters Yank Lawson, Wild Bill Davison and Warren Vache (who challenges and impresses Wild Bill) also trade off, as do clarinetist Peanuts Hucko, soprano-saxophonist Bob Wilber and tenor-saxophonist Danny Moss.

With guitarist Bucky Pizzareli, bassist Jack Lesberg, and drummer Gus Johnson keeping the music swinging, there is no loss of momentum as the remarkable band drives the piece to a close.
