Pharoah Sanders (1940-2022) first emerged as fiery tenor-saxophonist who regularly sat in with the John Coltrane Quartet during 1965 and was a member of the John Coltrane Quintet of 1966-67.
He took intense and ferocious solos that began where Coltrane’s left off.
However on his own projects, Sanders could also play ballads with a mellow tone that was full of spiritual warmth, hinting at late 1950s John Coltrane but with his own passion.
Sanders had a surprising avant-garde hit in the late 1960s with “The Creator Has A Master Plan” which featured the singing and yodeling of Leon Thomas.
More than three decades later, he was still playing the number at most of his concerts including this one from Hungary on Apr. 28, 2002.
Sanders is joined by pianist William Henderson, bassist Jeffrey Littleton, and drummer John Betsch for a version of “The Creator Has A Master Plan” that has him introducing his sidemen and taking the vocal himself.
