Louis Armstrong first discovered the folk song “The Faithful Hussar” during a European tour in the mid-1950s.
For this version, taken from the Ed Sullivan Show in 1961, he is joined by his All-Stars which at the time included trombonist Trummy Young (who has a short and exuberant solo) and clarinetist Joe Darensbourg.
Armstrong largely makes up the words during his vocal and he clearly has a good time playing this simple tune for the large audience.
