A phenomenal player by the time he was 13 (when he made his recording debut), guitarist Bireli Lagrene was able to sound just like Django Reinhardt while also displaying his own musical personality.
While he has continued to evolve since then, it is still remarkable to hear Lagrene in his early days.
Here is Lagrene when he is not quite 15 playing unaccompanied solo guitar at the 1981 Montreux Jazz Festival, performing “Rue de Pierre,” “Montreux Song” and “Mystery Pacific.”
