In his career, pianist Emmet Cohen has displayed the rare ability of being able to play creatively in several different styles (from stride to bop and free) without closely copying any of the historic greats.
He began recording in 2010, has collaborated with a variety of older jazz artists, and during the pandemic launched his weekly podcast Emmet’s Place which teams him and his trio with various guest players.
While he has never tried to copy Thelonious Monk, his version of “Trinkle Tinkle” hints at Monk while being performed in his own way.
In addition to Cohen, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Joe Farnsworth also take fine solos.
