Altoist Flavio Ambrosetti (1919-2012) was an engineer by day and a skilled alto-saxophonist at night, often performing in his native Italy.
His son, trumpeter Franco Ambrosetti (who was born in 1941) started out in bebop and was still active (often playing flugelhorn on ballad-oriented albums) in the 2020s.
This rare film clip from 1963 features the Ambrosettis along with the all-star rhythm section that during the era worked with Cannonball Asdderley: pianist Joe Zawinul (long before he switched his focus to electric keyboards), bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes.
They perform a medium-tempo blues and “Junior’s Idea”; Franco Ambrosetti’s very fluent solos steal the show although Flavio fares quite well too.
