Always an adventurous trumpeter, Ambrose Akinmusire worked with Steve Coleman when he was still in high school, won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2007, and has been an important improviser ever since.

In Oct. 2016 he was filmed guesting with the WDR Big Band, performing his original “Vartha.”

Orrin Evans (the ensemble’s leader) contributed the arrangement and there are also spots for guitarist Paul Shigihara and altoist Johan Hörlén.

Starting as a ballad, the piece builds up in intensity and features some excellent trumpet playing.
