Zoot Sims (1925-85) and Al Cohn (1925-88) always had very complementary styles and sounds on tenor.

Lifelong friends who had played together with Woody Herman’s Second Herd in the late 1940s, they occasionally co-led a quintet that featured them playing straight ahead jazz.

In England in 1968, Sims and Cohn are joined by a British rhythm section comprised of pianist Stan Tracey, bassist Dave Green, and drummer Phil Seamen.

The two tenors harmonize well and take typically swinging solos (with Sims going first) on Burt Bacharach’s “What The World Needs Now Is Love” and the uptempo “Doodle-Oodle” which features a hot (if brief) tradeoff and stirring ensembles.

This is a rare chance to see the two tenors playing together.
