No one had a tone quite like Stan Getz, a beautiful sound that made him the Johnny Hodges of the tenor.
But at the same time, Getz was a very fluent soloist quite at home at fast tempos and in nearly any musical situation.
This clip features Getz at a concert in Italy in 1961 where he is joined by pianist Lou Levy, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Ed Thigpen.
They play Dizzy Gillespie’s “Woody’n You” at a relaxed but cooking tempo that is filled with inventive ideas by Getz.
