Blakey: October 11, 1919 – October 16, 1990
Written by Kurt Weill for the in 1941 musical “Lady in the Dark,” “My Ship” reached its first jazz trumpet prominence when Miles Davis covered it in 1957 for “Miles Ahead.” Subsequently jazz pianist George Shearing would take it on.
Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis began playing regularly with Art Blakey in 1980.
