Astrud Gilberto had a very unlikely career, being a housewife who was asked at the last minute to sing on “The Girl From Ipanema” since her husband Joao Gilberto could not sing in English.
She had several other hits including “Corcovado” (which with English lyrics became “Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars”) and was one of the main stars of the bossa-nova movement of the 1960s.
Here she is singing in Europe with backing by tenor-saxophonist Ruud Brink (who does an excellent job of filling in for Stan Getz), pianist Pim Jacobs, guitarist Wim Overgaauw, an unidentified bassist, and drummer Dom Un Romao, creating a lovely version of “Quiet Nights.”
