This marvelous film clip is from 1964, shortly after the great tenor Ben Webster permanently moved to Europe.
Teamed with four top British jazz musicians including fellow tenor Ronnie Scott, Webster tells his story on a bop classic that he rarely performed, getting his message across with his large and raspy sound and by making every emotional note count.
The cooler-toned Scott is inspired, whipping through the chord changes.
It is good to see the great British pianist Stan Tracey if briefly before the two tenors trade fours during a good-natured but competitive tenor battle.
Personnel:
Ben Webster, tenor
Ronnie Scott, tenor
Stan Tracey, piano
Rick Laird, bass
