Betty Carter sings a swing ballad her way.
It took until the late 1980s before the innovative singer Betty Carter began to get long overdue recognition in the jazz world.
However she developed her innovative style during the 1960s, started her own label (Bet-Car) to document her singing, and was already famous to those “in the know” by then.
Here is Betty Carter in Italy in 1977 performing “What’s New” with fine accompaniment by pianist John Hicks, wringing every bit of emotion out of the swing ballad.
