Joshua Redman the son of free jazz saxophonist Dewey Redman grew up in Berkeley, California where he was a member of Berkeley High School's graduating class of '86.
He was out standing part of the schools award-winning jazz ensemble throughout high school and would go on to be winner of the 1991 "Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition."
