Altoist Cannonball Adderley (1928-75) was one of the most popular jazz bandleaders of the 1960s due to his soulful yet swinging music, his exuberant and joyful playing, and his ability to connect with audiences, both musically and with his intelligent and insightful verbal introductions.

Adderley mostly led a quintet with his brother cornetist Nat Adderley during his career, but his finest band was actually the sextet that he had in 1963.

In addition to brother Nat, pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes, Adderley’s group of that time featured the brilliant Yusef Lateef on tenor, flute and oboe.

Here is a classic version of Nat Adderley’s “Jive Samba,” a piece that poked a bit of gentle fun at the bossa-nova movement of the time.
