A set by one of jazz’s finest singers

Carmen McRae (1920-94) was one of the top singers in jazz for 40 years.

Her behind-the-beat phrasing, placement of notes, caustic wit, and tone are still major influences, and she always swung.

McRae is featured at the peak of her creative powers at this 1986 concert from Tokyo, accompanied by pianist Pat Coil, bassist Bob Bowman and drummer Mark Pulice.

Be sure to check out Carmen McRae’s rare appearance on piano during “As Long As I Live.”
