Helen Humes takes two memorable choruses with Basie
In 1950, when Count Basie was temporarily between big bands, he led an all-star septet that fortunately was filmed for a series of telescriptions by the Snader Company.
Of these clips, arguably the most rewarding one is the group’s version of “I Cried For You.”
This memorable film features a wonderful tenor-sax solo by Wardell Gray before Helen Humes puts a lot of feeling into her exuberant vocal.
Also in the group are trumpeter Clark Terry and clarinetist Buddy DeFranco, but Gray and Humes are the stars of this classic performance.
Personnel:
Count Basie, piano
Helen Humes, vocals
Clark Terry, trumpet
Buddy DeFranco, clarinet
Wardell Gray, tenor
Freddie Green, guitar
Jimmy Lewis, bass
Gus Johnson, drums
- Scott Yanow
