70 years after he made his recording debut in 1927, Benny Carter (in his last full year of playing before he retired) was still in his musical prime at the age of 90.
He had contributed his composition and arrangement of “Vine Street Rumble” to Count Basie’s 1960 album Kansas City Suite.
In Vienne, France in 1997 he sat in with the Count Basie Orchestra (which was fronted at the time by Grover Mitchell), performing the same tune.
This swinging version features pianist Terrance Conley, tenor-saxophonist Doug Lawrence, trumpeter Scotty Barnhart, trombonist Alvin Walker, and bassist James Leary in addition to the ageless Benny Carter on alto.
