Newman takes a melodic and lyrical solo
on a Duke Pearson classic

David “Fathead” Newman (1933-2009) was a distinctive and versatile tenor-saxophonist, flutist and altoist.

Newman is featured on alto during a quietly powerful version of Duke Pearson’s “Cristo Redentor,” a spiritual piece made famous when Donald Byrd recorded it with a vocal ensemble in 1963.

This slow, dignified and soulful version by Newman with the David Leonhardt Trio (performed at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania) is haunting and passionate.

Personnel:

David “Fathead” Newman, alto
David Leonhardt, piano
Tony Marino, bass
Taro Okamoto, drums

- Scott Yanow
