Dizzy Gillespie and his 1961 quintet with Lalo Schifrin and Leo Wright perform on Ralph Gleason's Jazz Casual program
Dizzy Gillespie could always be relied upon to play innovative and adventurous trumpet solos spiced with humor and unpredictability.
On Jan. 17, 1961, Gillespie and his quintet (which also featured Leo Wright on alto and flute, pianist Lalo Schifrin, bassist Bob Cunningham and drummer Chuck Lampkin) were guests on Ralph Gleason’s legendary Jazz Casual series.
Dizzy chats a bit with Gleason and performs his “Norm’s Norm,” “Blues After Dark,” the ballad “Lorraine” and one of the themes from Schifrin’s “Gillespiana.”
The relaxed performances give one an opportunity to both see and hear one of Dizzy Gillespie’s best combos.
Personnel:
Dizzy Gillespie, trumpet
Leo Wright, alto, flute
Lalo Schifrin, piano
Bob Cunningham, bass
Chuck Lampkin, drums
- Scott Yanow
