Modern hard bop from an impressive sextet

Although it may be overshadowed by more adventurous approaches, hard bop still very much lives more than six decades after it was developed in the early-to-mid 1950s.

For proof of that, this 53-minute performance from 2008 serves as perfect evidence.

Pianist Donald Brown and trumpeter Bill Mobley are featured co-leading a group also including such greats as Jean Toussaint on tenor and soprano, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, bassist Essiet Essiet and drummer Billy Kilson.

If the group sometimes recalls Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers (despite the inclusion of vibes), it is not too surprising since Brown and Toussaint were members in the past.

The top-notch sextet performs Mobley’s “Time Riff,” Brown’s “Carter Country,” the trumpeter’s “49th Street,” the pianist’s “La Montage de Clermont” and the closing “Swinging On Riff.”

Personnel:

Donald Brown, piano
Bill Mobley, trumpet
Jean Toussaint, tenor
Steve Nelson, vibes
Essiet Essiet, bass
Billy Kilson, drums
