Juan Tizol’s “Perdido” was performed a countless number of times by Duke Ellington’s orchestra, but this version is unique for a nonmusical reason.
The band performs an uptempo rendition that features hot solos from clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton, cornetist Ray Nance, Hamilton on tenor, and drummer Sam Woodyard who is well showcased.
The reason that Hamilton had two solos is that tenor-saxophonist Paul Gonsalves, who was usually featured on this number, was fast asleep, with his saxophone in his mouth!
