This rare hour-long video is a Danish television show from 1968 featuring half-hour sets by the Horace Silver Quintet and the Elvin Jones Trio.

The Silver pieces (“Nutville” and “Song For My Father”) give one the rare opportunity to see trumpeter Bill Hardman, a young Bennie Maupin and a pre-fusion Billy Cobham.

The Elvin Jones Trio features Jones and bassist Jimmy Garrison a year after John Coltrane’s death.

Joe Farrell (tenor and soprano), who is in excellent form, completes the pianoless trio, displaying the influence of Coltrane on “Village Dreams,” “Sweet Little Maya” and “Gingerbread Boy.”

Timeless music.
