Belgium, 1963
Composed by Cole Porter for the 1934 Broadway musical “Anything Goes,” “I Get a Kick out of You” was originally performed by Ethel Merman. Frank Sinatra is perhaps the most celebrated singer of the song.
While this is definitely a life-affirming rendition, prior to ratings systems that governed films in the United States, a drug reference (“Some get a kick from cocaine”) was in the original lyrics. For the later, movie version of the musical Porter changed that to “Some like the perfume in Spain.”
Personnel:
Erroll Garner, piano
Eddie Calhoun, double bass
Kelly Martin, drums
