The masterful trumpeter stretches out with a quartet

Freddie Hubbard (1938-2008) was one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time.
His tone was influenced by Clifford Brown and Lee Morgan, his technique was superior, and his creative ideas stretched beyond hard bop into ideas that were inspired by John Coltrane yet filled with his own musical personality.
28 in 1966, Freddie Hubbard had recently graduated from Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and was involved in his own impressive solo career.
This excerpt from a concert in Molde, Norway begins right after the melody statement (which was probably his uptempo blues “Byrdlike”) and includes a heated trumpet solo and spots for Hubbard’s unidentified pianist, bassist and drummer before the fade out.
