Frederick Dewayne "Freddie" Hubbard was born April 7, 1938 in Indiana.

He developed his trumpet chops studying with Max Woodbury, the principal trumpeter of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

While still a teenager, he worked with Wes and Monk Montgomery and recorded his first album as a leader at the age of 22.

John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman both sought him out and he replaced Lee Morgan with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.

This sizzling performance was captured the year after he left that band. Filmed at the Molde Jazz Festival in Norway in 1967.
