The masterful trumpeter whips his way through a burning version of “Cherokee”
Freddie Hubbard was one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time during his prime years (1960-1991) before a worsening lip injury largely ended his career.
This intriguing clip from 1990 features a muted Hubbard coming up with an endless flow of creative ideas during a rapid version of “Cherokee.”
Hubbard is followed by tenor-saxophonist Don Braden who does his best during a muscular solo, but bassist Jeff Chambers, who never falters despite the tempo, emerges as the co-star.
This is the first half of a lengthy performance, one of the last great Freddie Hubbard solos.
Personnel:
Freddie Hubbard, trumpet
Don Braden, tenor
Benny Green, piano
Jeff Chambers, bass
Carl Allen, drums
- Scott Yanow
