The first of two parts of an extended all-star version of the standard

Tenor-saxophonist George Coleman, who became well-known in jazz during his stint as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet during 1963-64, has had a strong and busy career ever since as both a leader and a sideman.

At the Music Inn in Rome back in 1981, Coleman led quite an all-star group, one full of enthusiasm and powerful soloists.

One of the performances of the night was a marathon version of “On Green Dolphin Street” that lasted over 20 minutes.

The first 14 minutes are featured on this first of two parts.

After the opening ensemble, there are spirited solos by altoist Bobby Watson, flugelhornist Danny Moore, baritone-saxophonist Mario Rivera (who is particularly adventurous), pianist Harold Mabern, and the fluent bassist Clint Houston.

Also in the group and featured in the second part are George Coleman and Sal Nistico on tenors and the always-smiling drummer Billy Higgins.
