Herbie Hancock and percussionist Cyro Baptista are featured on a stirring vamp
In 1998, Herbie Hancock recorded a modern set of George Gershwin songs called Gershwin’s World.
Around that time, he appeared on the Jazz Central program on BET Jazz with a group also including drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, percussionist Cyro Baptista and a bassist who is probably Ira Coleman.
Their jam on a piece called “Fascinating Rhythm” is actually not the Gershwin song; its title refers to the performance rather than the tune.
Cyro Baptista has the first few minutes to himself, playing some colorful tuned percussion including tuned bongos.
The second half of the performance features Herbie Hancock jamming on acoustic piano over a vamp and coming up with some creative ideas that build throughout in memorable fashion.
Personnel:
Herbie Hancock, piano
Ira Coleman, bass
Terri Lyne Carrington, drums
Cyro Baptista, percussion
