Tenor-saxophonist Illinois Jacquet became famous in the 1940s due to his classic solo on “Flying Home” and his passionate playing on uptempo pieces, setting the stage for rhythm and blues.
However Jacquet was also a master at playing slow blues as he shows on this remarkable film clip from a French concert in 1973.
With backing by organist Wild Bill Davis and drummer Al Bartee, Jacquet on “Blues Of Louisiana” makes every note and sound count on a slow blues, putting lots of feeling into his solo at what for most other horn players could be a very difficult tempo; Jacquet really talks through his tenor.
