A half-hour with Charles Lloyd, Keith Jarrett
and his popular quartet

In 1966, tenor-saxophonist and flutist Charles Lloyd formed a quartet with pianist Keith Jarrett, bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Jack DeJohnette that, against all odds, caught on with the general public.

After they were the hit of the 1966 Monterey Jazz Festival, the Charles Lloyd Quartet ranked with Cannonball Adderley’s quintet as the most popular group in jazz without compromising or watering down their music.

This 35-minute film from their 1967 tour of Europe (with Ron McClure succeeding McBee on bass) features the group at its best on three numbers, with many fine Lloyd and Jarrett solos.

Personnel:

Charles Lloyd, tenor, flute
Keith Jarrett, piano
Ron McClure, bass
Jack DeJohnette, drums
