Classic example of "Lunceford style"

Written by James Young and Melvin Oliver, “T'ain't What You Do (It's the Way That You Do It)” was first recorded by Harry James, Ella Fitzgerald and Jimmie Lunceford in 1939.

Mississippi native Jimmie Lunceford moved with his family to Denver in his childhood, and there he became a multi-instrumentalist. The trumpet player who wrote this song, Melvin “Sy” Oliver, helped shape the band's two-beat, instead of the usual four-beat, rhythm, which thereafter became known as the “Lunceford style.”
