Jimmy Rushing sings and plays piano on an edition of Ralph Gleason’s Jazz Casual
Jimmy Rushing was a masterful blues, jazz and swing singer who came to fame with the Count Basie Orchestra in the 1930s.
This broadcast (filmed on Oct. 26, 1962) from the Jazz Casual series is a bit of a revelation for, in addition to his singing, Rushing accompanies himself very well on piano, striding lightly.
The delightful and timeless half-hour also has Rushing chatting with host Ralph Gleason about his life.
Highlights include “Am I To Blame,” “Trix Ain’t Walkin’ No More” and “How Long, How Long Blues” but in reality, this entire film is charming, intimate and classic.
