San Francisco, Calif., 1962
John Lewis was a jazz pianist and educator who directed the influential Monterey Jazz festival for 25 years. He's proven formative to 20th century conceptions about the intersection between jazz and classical music.
Sadly, a little more than a decade after this Ralph-Gleason-hosted performance, Lewis' Modern Jazz Quartet would disband, as Lewis didn't find the act lucrative in proportion to the group's talents.
Personnel:
John Lewis, piano
Milt Jackson, vibraharp
Percy Heath, bass
Connie Kay, drums
