Performing as a solo artist and with various groups Johnny Guarnieri was musically active and appeared on an astounding number of recordings from the 1930s up to the 1980s.
After moving to California in the '60s he often played solo piano and stated teaching jazz.
His students helped to finance Taz Jazz Records as a tribute to his career as an educator, a label which he recorded on in the 1970s.
He was briefly a member of the Tommy Dorsey orchestra, had two stints with Benny Goodman, and became the very first to record jazz playing harpsichord as a member of Artie Shaw's "Gramercy Five."
In the 1940s Guarnieri also recorded for Savoy with a trio featuring, bassist Slam Stewart, and drummer Sammy Weiss.
