Clarinetist Buster Bailey is showcased on "Rose Room"
The legendary weekly broadcasts of Art Ford’s Jazz Party featured top veteran jazz artists in freewheeling and spontaneous settings in 1958, jamming on some of their favorite standards.
On this film from Oct. 9, 1958, clarinetist Buster Bailey (1902-67), one of the great if underrated masters of his instrument, is featured playing many swinging choruses on “Rose Room.”
During the final chorus, the horn players (which include Roy Eldridge, Buck Clayton, Urbie Green and Georgie Auld) play the melody of “In A Mellotone” behind Bailey.
Throughout this fun performance, Buster Bailey, who in his career had important associations with Fletcher Henderson, the John Kirby Sextet and Louis Armstrong, creates a heated solo that never runs out of ideas.
Personnel:
Buster Bailey, clarinet
Harry Sheppard, vibes
Johnny Guarnieri, piano
Vinnie Burke, bass
Osie Johnson, drums
- Scott Yanow
